Remove sound from a video privately

Many videos need the picture but not the original sound. You might be sharing a screen recording where background conversation was captured, preparing a clip for a silent autoplay section, replacing camera audio with narration later or removing music before posting a file publicly. This mute video tool strips the audio track and downloads a silent MP4 while leaving the visual content intact whenever possible.

Because the work happens in the browser, you do not need to upload the file to a remote editing service. The video is read from your device, written into ffmpeg.wasm's in-memory file system, processed with the audio disabled and returned as a download. Media Tools does not receive, store or inspect the clip. That is useful for confidential demos, client footage, classroom recordings, internal support captures and personal files.

How the audio track is removed

The underlying command uses ffmpeg's -an option, which tells the encoder to omit all audio streams from the output. The fastest path also copies the video stream directly, avoiding re-encoding and preserving the original visual quality. If the source codec cannot be copied into the MP4 container, the tool falls back to H.264 video encoding so the result works in more players. That fallback takes longer but avoids leaving you with an unusable file.

When to use a silent video

Silent clips work well for website hero sections, app previews, social posts with captions, bug reports and tutorials where written notes explain the action. For the best result, keep the original file until you verify the download. If the first run feels slow, remember that the page is downloading the WebAssembly engine once. Large or high-resolution videos still take time because all processing is being done by your own device rather than a server farm.

How to use

  1. Add videoDrop or select the video that has an audio track you want removed.
  2. Remove audioRun the local ffmpeg.wasm command with the -an option.
  3. DownloadSave the silent MP4 file to your device.

Frequently asked questions

Is the video uploaded to remove audio?
No. Muting happens locally in your browser with ffmpeg.wasm, and the original file never leaves your device.
Why does the first mute operation load an engine?
The site downloads the ffmpeg.wasm WebAssembly core on first use. It is large but lets the browser do real media processing without a server.
Will muting reduce video quality?
The tool tries to copy the video stream without re-encoding, so quality stays the same when the source is compatible.
What if stream copy fails?
The tool retries by re-encoding the picture to a standard MP4 video without audio, which is slower but more compatible.
